Liverpool - Villarreal

Liverpool-Villarreal Europa League semi-final second leg 2016 - as it happened

Liverpool were too strong for Villarreal. Klopp's tactical game was spot on as his side overturned the 1-0 deficit from the first leg with goals from Sturridge, Lallana and an own goal by Bruno.

Update content

Liverpool will meet Unai Emery's Sevilla - the defending champions in the final in Basel on 18 May.

Commiserations to Villarreal - fantastic rivals who miss out for the third time at this stage but at least are booked to play the Champions League play-offs. Top team, great club, fantastic fans. Their day will come.

90+3 | Full-time. Liverpool progress to the final. The forth time they have contested the trophy but the first since it was rebranded the Europa League. They hoisted the trophy in it's previous guise, the UEFA Cup, in 1973, 1976 and 2001.

90+1 | Substitution: Sturridge makes way for Lucas

90 | Three minutes of stoppage time added on.

90 | Klopp has only just made a sub, and he already wants to make another - Lucas Leiva getting ready. The Kop errupt into "You'll Never Walk Alone".

88 | Substitution: Firmino off to raptuous applause, Benteke on for the last two minutes of regulation time.

86 | Uff!! Sturridge could have added a fourth in a one-on-one with the keeper, who sticks out a foot to send the ball behind.

85 | The 'Kop Choir' now singing their heads off. They know there's no way back in this for Villarreal. Over in Seville, Unai Emery's team are leading 3-1 (5-3 agg.) and looks like it will be Liverpool - Sevilla in the final in Basel on May 18.

81 | Goooaal!! Lallana flicks in number three, turning Sturridge's shot past Areola. 3-0 (3-1 agg.)

77 | What's Moreno doing? Shoves Mario Gaspar and is very lucky not to have given away a penalty there... from where we are seeing it, that was a penalty.

74 | Saved! Areola forced into action to parry a Firmino stinger!

72 | Substitution: Last roll of the dice for Marcelino - Bonera on for dos Santos.

70 | Red Card. Víctor Ruiz is given a second yellow and Villarreal are down to 10.

67 | Substitution: Adrián enters, Roberto Soldado goes off to deafening whistles.

67 | Marcelino going for broke and will be bringing on more firepower - Adrián warming up.

64 | Villarreal now need to push upfield and that is leaving them vulnerable to Liverpool's lightning counters.

62 | Goooaal!!! Sturridge doubles the lead for Liverpool. Beats the offside trap this time and slots in - the ball going in after hitting both posts. 2-0 (2-1 agg.)

61 | Denis Suárez errs on a Villarreal attack and Liverpool break rapidly. Sturridge's potent drive is palmed around for a corner.

58 | Substitution: Manu Trigueros comes on, Pina trots off.

57 | Trigueros getting ready to come on for Villarreal

55 | Uff!! Soldado meets Dos Santos' free-kick but sends the ball wide. Villarreal's first chance of the half.

53 | Villarreal under a lot of Liverpool pressure - a lot.

52 | Corner to Liverpool right -hand side.

51 | Sturridge has a pop from outside the box, easy for the keeper. Villarreal soacking up a lot of Liverpool pressure at the start of this second half.

50 | Pwwwr!! Milner attacks through the centre, shoots low, no worroes for Areola.

47 | Ayy!! Coutinho cuts inside and lashes a shot in at the near post, blocked by Areola.

45 | Off we go again, second half underway. No changes by either side at half-time.

Well, to summarize: Liverpool were certainly the dominant side in the first 45 minutes, exploiting Villarreal's weaker left flank and not letting Marcelino's side labour on the ball for a second. Klopp's troops had a dream start - levelling the tie practically at the start but seemed the slacken off a little from the half hour onwards and should really have tried to take the sting out of the game with a second goal. Like in the first leg, Villarreal are deadly on the break but look shaky at the back. At least they'll have their own fans behind them in the second half.

45 | That's half-time - no stoppage time added by Mr Kassai. 1-1 on aggregate the tie is perfectly poised.

45 | Ufff!! Bakambu gets infront of his marker and gets a shot in, smothered by Mignolet.

43 | Booking. Lallana - late, very late.

42 | Villarreal struggle to clear from a Liverpool onslaught. Looking a tad nervous at the back.

39 | Booking. Soldado punished for a foul on Coutinho.

37 | Corner whipped over from the left, safely collected by Villarreal keeper Alphonse Areola.

32 | Tempers starting to flare a little now - this time Soldado vents his spleen in frustration. The ref has a word in his ear, and Lovren's.

31 | Booking. Villarreal centre-back Víctor Ruiz has the dubious honour of being the first to go into Mr Kassai's notebook.

29 | Denis Suárez lucky not to go into the book after lashing out when a Villarreal break was cut short. Liverpool played on.

28 |  Corner to Liverpool. Again Villarreal look weak on their left-hand side.

24 | Uyyy!! Corner swung in from the left and Pina just gets a head to it to put the ball out for another corner from the other side. Close.

23 | Another Liverpool attack down the right and ball lofted to the back post but there's no one there...

20 | Milner appears to be hobbling after being barged over. Hopefully its' just a knock.

19 | Villarreal allowed a couple of advances on to Mignolet's goal but the ball's cleared. Living danerously by Liverpool - you can't afford to let a side like Marcelino's settle on the ball.

16 | Liverpool not giving Villarreal any time on the ball, that said, 'El Submarine' win a corner.

15 | Quarter of an hour gone. Villarreal on the back foot so far. Liverpool swarming forward and have the guests pegged back in their own half.

13 | Milner races onto a diagonal ball into the box but skews his shot wide.

6 | Goooaalll!!! In their 3rd attack on goal, Areola tips away Clyne's low ball across the face of goal, it's played back in for Sturridge who gets a touch but it's given as an own goal from Bruno. 1-0 on the night, 1-1 on aggregate. The tie's level after just over six minutes!

5 | Uff!! Now Jonathan dos Santos gets a clear shot on goal but blasts over.

4 | Uyy!! Bakambu squares, the ball's chested down to Mario Gaspar whose snap shot is parried by Mignolet.

2 | Sturridge gets a cross in from the right but safely collected by Areola. Liverpool will be looking to get bodies in at the back post, one of the few weak spots in this Villarreal side.

And we're off!!

The two captains Milner and Bruno exchange pennants, looks like Liverpool will be attacking the Kop in this first half.

Out comes the teams...

"You'll Never Walk Alone" belted out by both sets of fans - never fails to give the shivers. This is what European nights are all about isn't it?

The teams are out!

Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Clyne, Moreno, Toure, Lovren, Milner, Can, Lallana, Firmino, Coutinho, Sturridge

Villarreal XI: Areola, Mario, Musacchio, Victor, Costa, Dos Santos, Pina, Bruno, Denis, Soldado, Bakambu

Preview Liverpool-Villarreal

Anfield is the setting for tonight's second leg of the 2015/16 Europa League semi-final  as Liverpool welcome LaLiga side Villarreal wit the Spanish side one goal ahead after Adriano's late strike last week at el Madrigal.

Marcelino Garcia Toral is aiming to write a page in the Castellon based club's history books by securing a first place in a European final after the club infamously fell short in the 2005/06 Champions League semi final after a last minute Riquelme penalty miss saw the Spanish team eliminated by Arsenal. Echoes of that April 2006 evening are still prevalent among the club's fans and tonight is a perfect opportunity to lay the ghost of 2006 to rest.

Despite the one goal  deficit, Liverpool head coach Klopp was in confident in yesterday's pre match press conference, boldly stating that no team he has been involved with has been beaten by a Spanish side. The main doubt regarding Klopp's selection process is the availability of Emre Can, the Turk missed last week's first leg and is the engine room at the heart of the Liverppol midfield.

Villarreal will be buoyed on by 2,000 fans (the biggest ever overseas expedition by fans of the "Yellow Submarine") and both sets of supporters are expected to pay their respective tribute to the victims of the Hillsborough tragedy through pre-match tifos.
