Thousands of Atlético fans sing Simeone support at the Calderón
After being close contenders for LaLiga and finalists in the Champions League, Atlético Madrid fans congregate outside their home singing songs for Simeone to stay.
- LaLiga Santander, matchday 20: Alavés-Atlético Live.
Around three thousand Atlético Madrid fans got together outside their footballing home to say thank you to the club that has given them such a successful season.
With only a few games to go in the league, they looked like the only challengers to leaders Barcelona and were on course to be the top dogs in the capital. As it turned out the finished third, just behind neighbours, Real Madrid. In the Champions League they had to overcome holders Barcelona and many people's favourites for the title, Bayern Munich - coached by ex-Barça man Pep Guardiola - to reach the final where they only lost out to Real Madrid on a penalty shoot-out. Although no silverware to show for it, 2015-16 can be remembered as a campaign where once again Atlético were able to rub shoulders with the elite of world football.
As well as showing their appreciation to the club, there was a clear message to manager Diego Simeone. On the back of the disappointment after the Champions League final, the Argentine coach has spoken about his need to assess his future and many rojiblancos are concerned that this means a new challenge elsewhere. Songs and chants were focused with him in mind, and a hope that more success with their current manager at the helm is ahead.
