Gerard Piqué spoke about how Spain must recover from their elimination from Euro 2016 and also had a word for club team mate Leo Messi, who suffered similar disappointment with Argentina who lost the Copa America to Chile.

Disappointment: “We were hoping to make the next round at the very least, but it didn't run out that way; so now we have to start thinking about Russia”.

Buffon's wonder-save: “He played well tonight but they also had a fair few clear chances. In the second half we took them on man-for-man but overall, they were the better side. Sometimes, things just don't work out. To win, Spain has to play better than our opponents and we didn't do that today”.

End of an era: “I wouldn't go as far as saying that. What is true is that the current Spain side is not at the same level as the one which won the World Cup and the previous Euros. There's promise there but the level's not the same and we have to admit it. Now we have to concentrate on making sure we are able to compete with the top teams in time for Russia 2018”.

The reasons behind today's defeat: “Perisic's goal really hurt us. We werev left with a mountain to climb”.

Intensity: “People always talk about that; I don't think it was a quuestion of that although they seemed more intense at times. We prefer to have the ball. They pressed us effectively, made us feel uncomfortable and attacked us. They were superior to us”.

Del Bosque's continuity: “He deserves the right to decide what's best for him. He's a very important person and it is best for him to make a decision; and if he feels he has the strength to do so, I hope he continues”.

Messi announcing he will not play again for Argentina: “I'm sure that it was quite a blow for him. I know how competitive he is and that he'll pick himself up”.

World Cup Russia 2018: “Now's the time for us to reflect”.
