It’s official. Barcelona announced through its official website on Friday that Neymar has signed a contract extension until 2021. The confirmation comes after club president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, had revealed as much in a press conference on Thursday afternoon, and was something that the player himself also publicised on his official twitter account later that evening.

The Brazilian’s new contract will see him earn €15 million a year for the next five years – a massive investment in the player from the Catalan club, adding to the €100m they’ve already spent on him.

As well as the extension, Barça have also increased the striker’s buy-out clause, raising it from €190m to €200m, a move that’s likely been imposed to scare off the interests of other big clubs such as Manchester United and PSG, who had been determined to tempt Neymar away from Camp Nou. In 2018, this clause will automatically rise to €222m and for the last three years of the 24-year old’s contract, clubs will need to fork out a whopping €250m to free him from his contract.

After months of speculation surrounding the Barça number eleven’s future, the player finally spoke on Thursday, saying “Happy to continue living a dream. Long live Barca and Catalonia.”
