Fernando Torres spoke to the press ahead of Atlético’s friendly against Melbourne Victory. “Against Tottenham we started to play well from the 15th minute. Atlético are a reliable side with a settled system and when we go ahead it’s very difficult for opposition teams to turn the score around. It was only the second game of pre-season and the legs, as well as the head, aren’t up to the speed we want yet. But we’re on the right track.”
Gameiro
Asked about Atlético’s search for a number nine (which was concluded on Saturday morning when Kevin Gameiro agreed terms to move to the Calderón), Torres said: “There’s only one number nine, it says so on the shirt. The club are looking for another striker and we hope one comes. Whoever comes in has to be prepared to work hard and compete for a place. All of the players that are here have as our objective to work as hard as possible.”
Speaking about the upcoming season, the striker noted: “The team is going to grow a lot after everything that happened last season. We’ve been playing in finals for many years now and we have to keep that level up. Team spirit is going to be very high and we have players at a good age to be competitive and younger players coming through to help. They don’t have a lot of time to adapt to what the boss wants but I’m sure we’ll make them stronger.”
