Real Madrid were unable to continue their perfect start to the season at home to Villarreal on Wednesday as they were held to a 1-1 draw.

Villarreal took the lead just before half time after they were a awarded a penalty from a Sergio Ramos handball. Bruno converted the spot kick expertly, dinking the ball Panenka-style down the centre of the goal as Casilla dived to his left.

Zinedine Zidane's side -- who had been left frustrated by a well organised Villarreal defence during the first half -- responded almost immediately after the break, with Ramos making up for handing the opposition a penalty by getting on the end of a Toni Kroos corner to head home in the 48th minute.

From there on in, it looked like there'd be only one winner, with Real Madrid throwing everything at the Yellow Submarine to find the winner.

However, Los Blancos found goalkeeper Asenjo in inspired form, who denied the home team on a number of occasions, most notably from Morata and Ronaldo in the final five minutes.

As it happened:

Full time: Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal

92 mins | Free kick 30 yards out! Ronaldo stands over it, the Bernabéu expects. Can he pull another vintage effort out of the bag? No he can't. It beats the wall but bounces easily in front of Asenjo. And that ladies and gentlemen, is that.

90 mins | Three minutes of added time

89 mins | Real Madrid throwing everything at this to try and get the winner. Ronaldo is almost the hero but his shot finds Asenjo once again. The Villarreal keeper has been mighty impressive tonight.

85 mins | It's another penalty shout for Real Madrid. Vazquez's shot is blocked from six yards out and the ball falls to Ramos who feels a challenge coming and dives to the ground. He's perhaps lucky not to get a second yellow there for simulation. The Bernabéu thinks its a pen, but the replays don't lie.

82 mins | Morataaaa....screams the commentator as the young Spaniard get his head to a Vazquez cross, powering the ball into the ground. It almost bounces into the top corner but Asenjo is there again though to tip it behind.

80 mins | Kroos breaks forward and unleashes a swerving drive that almost catches Asenjo out. The keeper has to change direction to save it and gathers at the second attempt.

78 mins | Some lovely build up from Villarreal almost gives Mario a chance for a pop at goal from 8 yards out but it's cut out in the nick of time by Varane.

75 mins | Yellow card for Kroos for foul on Castillejo

74 mins | Penalty shout for Real Madrid as Ruiz makes slight contact with Benzema in the box. The Frenchman goes down very easily though and the ref waves away.

72 mins | SUB: Second change for Villarreal. Pato comes on for Sansone.

70 mins | SUB: Bale comes off. Vazquez replaces him.

68 mins | Yellow card for Cristiano Ronaldo after he catches Soriano rather late.

65 mins | So close! Benzema lays it off to Bale who sends it curling towards the far post from 20 yards out. Asenjo stands there beaten and helpless but it just goes wide. Is it going to be one of those nights for Real Madrid?

63 mins | SUB: Cheryshev is replaced by Soriano

60 mins | And that was inches away from being Real Madrid's second. Bale threads a neat ball to Carvajal who plays it across Villarreal's back four. It looks for all the world that Cristiano will get there to slide it in but there's just too much on it. Ronaldo slams the floor in frustration.

57 mins | It's all going on in and around Villarreal's box now. Real Madrid attacking relentlessly and it has the feeling of a period of play where something has to give. Villarreal holding on a tad here.

54 mins | This second half is unrecognisable from the first. The pace has picked up considerably and Real Madrid are playing with much more purpose. Villarreal continue to look dangerous breaking forward though. Real will want to make sure they don't get caught out again.

52 mins | Yellow card for Angel after he chops down Bale.

50 mins | Real Madrid have cranked it up a bit and they are delivering the kind of response that Zinedine Zidane would have wanted to going in down at half time. Benzema almost makes it two with a glancing header which sails just millimetres wide.

48 mins | GOOOOOAL! 1-1. Ramos gets the equaliser! He was a fault for the Villarreal penalty but Mr. Reliable rises highest at the back post from a Kroos corner and headers inside Ansejo's near post. Ramos: he's the man with the deadly head.

47 mins | Free-kick in Bale territory as Cheryshev fouls Carvajal on the left hand side of the box. Kroos takes it though and Ansejo fumbles what looks like an easy catch. It falls to Ramos whose shot is blocked....

46 mins | Peeeeep! We're back underway.

Half time summary: Villarreal have executed their game plan perfectly here. They've kept Real Madrid comfortably at bay and looked dangerous when hitting on the break. Despite seeing little of the ball, you'd have to say that their 1-0 lead at half time is well deserved, considering they created the only clear cut chance of the game. Zinedine Zidane will have some thinking to do during the break at how he can inspire his side to dismantle this sturdy-looking Yellow Submarine.

45 mins | GOOOAL! 0-1 VILLARREAL! It comes from the penalty spot as Ramos handles in the box. The Real captain goes down holding his face but it's definitely hit his hand and the ref rightly awards it and gives Ramos a yellow card. Bruno steps up and dinks a cheeky Panenka pen down the middle! And that's the last kick of the half!

44 mins | CHANCE! It's the best one of the game so far and it falls to Villarreal. Cheryshev only has Csilla to beat as it falls to him inside the area but his shot his tame.

42 mins | SUB: It's a blow for Real Madrid as Marcelo limps off injured and is replaced by Carvajal.

40 mins | Villarreal have done well at frustrating Real Madrid so far. They've kept the men in white restricted to a couple of long shots, all in all.

37 mins | Bale fizzes a trademark left-footed dipper towards goal but it ends up a good few yards left of Ansejo's post.

33 mins | Kroos, who is controlling things out there, sends a lovely diagonal ball to find Danilo on the right-hand side of the box. His first touch is a good one, as it gives him sight of goal, but the defender's shot is blocked.

29 mins | Chance for Ronaldo! James plants a ball on his head and he nods it down towards the corner only for Asenjo to scramble across and save it. It wouldn't have counted though as Cristiano is penalised for a push

27 mins | Villarreal's first sight on net almost ends up in a goal. Trigueros feeds Cheryshev who wriggles into space on the edge of the Madrid box and unleashes a fierce right-footed drive which is destined for the top corner. Casilla manages to get a strong hand to it and tip it over the bar. Close!

22 mins | A good ball over the top from Kroos finds Marcelo who meets it on the volley out left and it rockets dangerously across goal. Villarreal put it behind for another corner, which is headed away.

18 mins | Chance! Marcelo swings one in from the left to the back post. Bale rises high to head it back across goal and it looks certain Benzema will nod it in. Bruno gets up well and does enough to stop him getting clear contact though and goalkeeper Asenjo is there to stop it going over the line.

16 mins | The game is moving along at quite a pedestrian pace at the moment, which can often be the case in the opening quarter of games at the Bernabéu as Real Madrid suss their opponents out, while the other side is happy to sit back and watch them knock it around. That's what we're seeing here.

12 mins | Los Blancos dominating possession so far, as you might expect them to. Nothing to show for it in terms of clear opportunities so far though, other than that Benzema half chance.

10 mins | The corner taken by Kroos is not dealt with too well by Villarreal on this occasion and it almost presents Karim Benzema a chance after the ball bobbles around in the box and finds its way to the Frenchman's feet. His attempt is blocked and it's out for another corner. Nothing comes of it though.

9 mins | Bale wins another corner. That's the third he's won in less than ten minutes...

7 mins | Bale breaks forward down the right to the byline and pulls back a cross which is again deflected over for a corner. Bale is Real Madrid's early danger man here.

5 mins | Real Madrid win their first corner from a deflected Bale cross but James' resulting delivery is dealt with by Villarreal's defence.

2 mins | A slow and steady start to this game as both teams get their bearings. Real Madrid knocking it around comfortably, and Villarreal, you suspect, settling into a more defensive formation that'll be employing for the most part.

0 mins | Peeeeeep! We're off...

Real Madrid vs Villarreal: latest news

19:55 | The players walk out on to the pitch on a warm and pleasant night at the Bernabéu, and get a typically warm and pleasant reception from the Bernabéu crowd. Here we go....

19:30 | Half an hour to go...Stay right where you are!

19:15 | 45 minutes till kick off! The teams are out (see above) and the big news is that the BBC are back in the starting line up!

18:10 | Coming up straight after the Real Madrid v Villarreal game, of course, is the big one: Barcelona v Atléti. We're also bringing you all the build-up and live match action to that game right here.

16:50 | Can Real Madrid make history with a 17th straight LaLiga win tonight...?

15:47 | Ronaldo will almost certainly start tonight after his bout of flu. With the news that the Ballon d'Or is going back to its original format we looked at how the voting would have gone under the old rules - and it turns out Ronaldo wouldn't have won his 2013 crown if only the journalists had voted...

14:46 | James is likely to start against Villarreal, and this is a big chance for him to impress Zidane. He hasn't started for Real Madrid since 8 May...

14:02 | Many are expecting the BBC partnership to start tonight's game but Zidane may favour the hungry Morata in place of Benzema. James Rodriguez has also started to impress the manager more and could be in line for some action especially with key players missing.

13:18 | AS English have predicted a home win tonight but if Sansone can find the magic that helped his team overcome La Real at the weekend we could be in for an upset.

12:03 | Fans of the Yellow Submarine will be hoping for an improvement on the 3-0 defeat when they last visited the Bernabéu in April. Better memories of their 1-0 win in the first league meeting between the two last campaign in December.

11:13 | Although minds will be focused on tonight's game, a few eyes at Madrid will have been on the Fifa Club World Cup draw. The European Champions will play in the semi-final of the tournament on the 15 December.

08:57 | It's a cool but sunny start here in the Spanish capital and although the afternoon temperatures will reach a warm 28 degrees, by the time the players kick off it will have dropped to around 24. Bring your shades if you're going to the Bernabéu.

Real Madrid vs Villarreal: preview of Matchday 5, LaLiga Santander

The hosts, Real Madrid, aim to continue their winning streak following their 0-2 victory on the road in their last outing at Espanyol with now surprise fringe player, James Rodriguez helping them on their way.  A 17th consecutive win - to stand alone in the record books - will be made difficult by a battling and talented side in Villarreal.

The Yellow Submarine docks in the capital looking to cause a bit of an upset but have the pedegree to put up a decent fist of it. Lying just four points off their opponents early pace they will be aiming to quieten the home fans early and then push for the three points as they target another top four finish this campaign.

Real Madrid

The home side will be without some of their top stars but that is currently not something that is hurting the belief within the camp - or in the stands. Zidane's squad's strength in depth, despite virtually no activity in the summer transfer market has excited some and surprised many. Casemiro, seen ahead of the season as a pivotal cog in the white wheel, is on the list of absentees as is Modric and Pepe. Welsh wizard Gareth Bale and club talisman Cristiano Ronaldo have both made the squad list after a knock and bout of flu respectively. The BBC may start for the first time in a league game this season.

Villarreal

Escribá's side arrive in Madrid after an important victory against Real Sociedad - which included a strike from the halfway line from Sansone - again with Champions League ambitions this year. They'll not be heavily baedck to win this one away from home but although Madrid are on an impressive streak, they'll be wise to remember that their last two wins against Sporting Lisbon and Espanyol have been far from simple tasks.

Unfortunately for Escribá, it looks as though he'll be without the attacking threats of Roberto Soldado and Bakambu so Pato and Trigueros will be asked to take the game to Madrid. If they can get some control in the early period of the game and temper what is expected to be a noisy crowd then they are a side that are well capable of keeping it tight at the back and frustrating even the biggest of stars.
