Atlético's worst start under Simeone: 21 points from 36

After the defeat to Real Madrid, Atletico have now only won 21 points from 12 games played in LaLiga, their lowest total at this stage in the Diego Simeone era. But there is some room for optimism...

Atletico Madrid’s defeat in the derby compounded the side’s worst start to a LaLiga season in the Diego Simeone era. Atleti have won fewer points after 12 games than any other season since ‘Cholo’ arrived at the club.

In 2012-13, the first year under Simeone, Atletico had gained 31 points by this stage of the campaign and in 2013-14, 33 points were on the board. That compares to the 21 points (out of 36 possible) that the Rojiblancos currently have in 2016-17.

Nine points behind Real Madrid

Worse still for Atletico is that the loss on Saturday was not only the last ever LaLiga derby at the Vicente Calderón, but a result that leaves them nine points behind leaders Real Madrid. Draws against Alavés and Leganés in the previous two match days, as well as the losses to Real Sociedad and Sevilla earlier in the season have left Simeone’s side in the unfavourable position of sitting outside the Champions League spots.

On a brighter note for Atleti however, the club have won all four of their Champions League game this season (the only team in the completion left with a 100% record) and have already secured qualification through to the second round.
