Five years at the helm

Jürgen Klinsmann was fired from his position as coach of the United States national team after two consecutive 2018 World Cup qualifying defeats.

Sunil Gulati, president of CONCACAF announced the German’s dismissal on Monday but didn’t name a replacement. The USA are not in action until May next year when they host Honduras in their next qualifier.

“Today we made the difficult decision of parting ways with Jürgen Klinsmann. We want to thank Jürgen for his hard work and commitment during these last five years. He took pride in having the responsibility of steering the program and there were considerable achievements along the way,” Gulati said in a statement.

Writing on the wall

Klinsmann took the post in July 2011, replacing Bob Bradley. He guided the US to a 12-match winning streak in 2013 but lost credibility when they could only finish fourth in the 2015 Gold Cup, and lost a Confederations Cup Play Off to Mexico.

Earlier this month, the US crashed to a 2-1 home defeat to Mexico in Columbus then were thrashed 4-0 away to Costa Rica leaving them bottom of their qualifying group.

One of the coaches tipped to take the job is LA Galaxy boss Bruce Arena.
