Saints march into record books

Welsh champions The New Saints broke Ajax Amsterdam's 44-year-old record for the most consecutive wins in top-flight football on Friday.

A 2-0 victory at Cefn Druids in the Welsh Premier League allowed them to move to 27 successive wins, one better than the 26 matches won in a row by the legendary Ajax team of Johan Cruyff in 1972.

The New Saints, also known as TNS, have won 21 successive games in the league this season and six in cup tournaments.

They are 21 points clear in the table and easily on course for a ninth league title in 12 seasons.

Ajax '72

The previous record was set by Dutch outfit Ajax in 1972, a side which included international such as Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens and Arie Haan.

The Amsterdam based club won 26 games in a row in all competitions, including 19 league wins in the Dutch domestic league, four European Cup victories and three Dutch Cup wins.

Cortiba from the Brazils Serie A won 24 straight games in 2011 and Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid strung together 22 consecutive winning games during the 2014-15 season before falling to Milan in the emirates cup friendly followed by a defeat to Valencia in Mestalla.

Proud

First team manager Craig Harrison spoke with BBC Shropshire after the 0-2 away win over Cefn Druids and stated that he was "unbelievably proud of all his players, staff and everyone involved with are football club.To break a world record is a very surreal experience".

The UK record for an unbeaten run in professional football is held by Scotland's Glasgow Celtic back in 1915-19 when the Celts went 62 games undefeated (49 won, 13 drawn).
