Nico Gaitán spoke to Spanish state broadcaster Televisión Española about his first six months as an Atlético Madrid player under Diego Simeone.

Nine starts since move from Benfica

“I haven’t lived up to Diego Simeone’s expectations so far,” the former Benfica midfielder said, after making 17 appearances (nine as a starter) and scoring four goals for the side since his summer move from the Estádio da Luz.

"Simeone helped me decide"

Gaitán also said that Simeone was one of the “main factors that helped me decide to move to Atlético,” but admitted that he wants to feature more regularly in the starting 11: “Obviously every player wants to play but the side is the same as it was last season so it’s difficult to break into it.

The Argentina international also praised his teammate Yannick Carrasco, who has often started ahead of him in the side this season. “Carrasco is a great player. If he has to play instead of me so that the team wins, then he should play.”
