Copa América to run in parallel with Euros from 2020
Brazil 2019 will be the final "odd-year" tournament before USA hosts again in 2020. The idea is to reduce the number of times players are released by clubs.
The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) has made the decision to begin staging it’s flagship tournament, the Copa América, in the same year as the European Championships from 2020.
European Championship format shake-up
Brazil 2019 will therefore be the final Copa América held in an odd year and will bring down the curtain on the traditional rotation of the tournament, which will be held again in the USA in 2020, where Chile won the Copa América Centenario last year. The 2020 tournament will be held in parallel with the European Championships, which itself will undergo a major change with the tournament being held in 13 cities in 13 different countries across Europe instead of in one or two host nations.
The 2023 Copa América in Ecuador will be postponed to fit in with the new scheduling format.
US pressure to host Copa América
According to Globoesporte, pressure from the United States to host the event again after the financial and sporting success of the 100th anniversary tournament in 2016 led to the decision.
Fifa are also in favour of the move as it will benefit European clubs, who will only have to release their international players for one summer instead of in two consecutive years to cover both tournaments.
