Cristiano Ronaldo is set to inaugurate Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo Airport on Wednesday but the decision of the relevant authorities to thus honour the Real Madrid player has met with widespread criticism on the Atlantic island and the mainland.

Cristiano Ronaldo Airport not universally popular choice

Firstly, the Portuguese central government has questioned the authority of the regional government of Madeira to rename Funchal’s airport without due consultation and on Monday a more strongly worded opinion came from the pen of former secretary of state for the Portuguese Socialist Party, Francisco Seixas da Costa, who launched a scathing attack on his Facebook page, terming the decision to plaster Ronaldo’s name on the terminal as “pushing the boundaries of common sense, justice and the absurd.”

Seixas da Costa went on to suggest that “it would be more just to name the airport Alberto João Jardim [President of the Regional Government of Madeira from 1978 to 2015], in recognition of how he fought against the central government and the European institutions for the good of his region.”

"Ronaldo would be better served by a stadium or sports complex"

The politician admitted that his post would “be controversial and not to the taste of many, but added: “Without doubt, the name of Jardim would jar less for the airport than that of Cristiano Ronaldo, whose abilities as an athlete would be better honoured with his name on a stadium or a sports complex.”
