Real Madrid and Spain midfielder Marco Asensio spoke to ‘El Larguero’ about the Spain Under 21’s victory over Italy, his hope to progress to the senior team, and his intention to stay at the Bernabéu.

Content with La Rojita

Spain’s Under 21 team, La Rojita, saw off Italy by two goals to one on Monday evening. Captain Saúl Ñiguez and Borja Mayoral were the scorers.

“We played well and had a good first half in particular”, Asensio said, “every game we are playing better. It was the last game before the U21 European Championship in Poland, and we’re happy with where we are. We have a good understanding on the pitch, and a good relationship off it.

The Mallorca-born midfielder remained coy when asked about progression to Julen Lopetegui’s senior squad, who play France on Tuesday evening.

I’m focusing on the European Championship this summer. After, we’ll see what happens.”

'I want to succeed at Real Madrid'

At club level, Asensio appears content, despite limited opportunities to impress.

“I feel valued by Zidane. He speaks to me a lot and has confidence in me. I try to respond to that in the best way possible.”

“There are a lot of very good players at Madrid. It is difficult to play, and whenever I’m given the opportunity, I try to demonstrate what I can do”

He is keen to stay at the Bernabéu and fight for his place.

“I’m clear that I want to succeed at Real Madrid. My first choice is always to stay here, and we’ll see what happens next season. But my intention is to continue at Real Madrid.”

Don't go, Isco

Asensio also hopes that his teammate Isco will stay.

I want him to stay with us at Madrid. His talent and quality is incredible, and I hope that he stays.”

Speculation surrounding Isco’s future has been rife, amid rumours of a move to Barcelona. Yet the latest suggestion is that he is close to signing a new contract at Real Madrid.
