Bayern Munich have emerged as a suitor for Atlético Madrid’s Belgium international midfielder Yannick Carrasco. The board at the Allianz Arena and Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti are firm admirers of Carrasco with the Italian having witnessed him at first hand during his spell at the Bernabéu and more recently when Carrasco scored the only goal of th egame in a 1-0 Champions League win over Bayern earlier in the season.

Bayern are keen to sign Carrasco, who is viewed in Munich as a long-term successor to Douglas Costa, but it will not be a straightforward operation: aware of interest from some of Europe’s wealthiest clubs, Atlético inserted a 100-million-euro minimum release clause into Carrasco’s most recent contract.

Diego Simeone believes he can still bring more out of the mercurial Belgian, who has had his ups and downs this season but remains a player who is different to anything else the Argentinean has at his disposal. Bayern have Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry in the position Carrasco operates in but both players are nearing the end of their careers. Costa is also a player who occupies similar spaces to the Belgian but he has not reached same heights this season as he did in 2015-16. Kingsley Coman is on loan from Juventus although Bayern have an option to buy the 20-year-old France international at the end of the season.

Bayern to break the bank?

Carrasco’s contract runs until 2022 and at 23 the player has a lengthy career ahead of him. Atlético are not keen on selling one of their prized assets but if Bayern come in with a huge offer the Calderón may be tempted to do business.
