Atlético won't be losing any sleep over Diego Simeone and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) who are searching for a new national team coach after sacking Edgardo Bauza earlier this week. Simeone was one of the preferred candidates for the Argentina post with some AFA directors, until El Cholo affirmed that he will be at Atlético for the 2017-18 season. The photograph of Simeone at the new Wanda Metropolitano stadium symbolically underlines his commitment to the Rojiblancos. However in Argentina, some commentators claim that Simeone has made a pact with the madrileños which would enable him to be released from his contract.
Penalty clause in Simeone's contract with Atlético
That however, is only partly true. Simeone doesn have a severance clause written into his contract but it is for compensation should either side fail to honour the agreement - nothing to do with a scenario where he would leave the club. The penalty clause has been set at over 20 million euros - and that is a conservative estimate; it is believed to be closer to 30 million - a particularly high figure for a coach.
Simeone is happy at Atlético
Nobody from the AFA has been in touch with Atlético which in itself is significant as the first to know about any interest would be the club. Atleti's stance couldn't be clearer: the club is counting on Simeone and the Argentinean is very happy where he is.
