Deportivo La Coruña left back Luisinho has been ruled out for the remainder of the season, as Pepe Mel receives another blow in his quest to nudge Depor over the line to La Liga safety.

Luisinho injured in bizarre fashion

The Portuguese suffered a sprain to the medial ligament of his left knee in bizarre fashion. During a training session in the lead up the the Branquiazules home defeat to Espanyol at the weekend, Luisinho received a ball to the face. The impact forced him to twist his knee, causing the injury. He will be on the treatment table for approximately two months.

Deportivo look over their shoulders

Deportivo sit one place above the La Liga drop zone. Sporting are five points behind with two rounds of fixtures yet to play. Matches against Villarreal (a) and Las Palmas (h) await, and a win in either would mathematically secure their safety.

The loss of Luisinho is significant. In recent weeks, he has been one of the few players, along with striker Florin Andone, to show a flicker of life. His absence also robs Pepe Mel of some tactical flexibility, given Luisinho’s ability to play on the left wing, as well as on the left side of defence.

Navarro's time to shine

Fernando Navarro, the veteran full back, will deputise in Luisinho’s absence. It remains uncertain as to whether Sidnei will return from injury in time for the trip to Villarreal on Sunday. The Depor squad return to training on Wednesday, and the Brazilian centre half will test his fitness then.
