A few hours of sleep, a night on the plane, a chat with Juan Pablo Montoya, a few smiles here and there, and then, complete concentration on the Indy 500. Fernando Alonso’s adventure in Indianapolis is underway.
Alonso makes strong start in Indy500
The Asturian has started the first of ten days of practice on the track, and clocked a speed of 221.634 miles per hour (356.67 kilometers per hour) in the first two-hour session. His best lap time of the 2.5 mile oval was 40.607 seconds.
Alonso is continuing with the work programme that McLaren Honda Andretti, his team, have designed for him.
Even though he was not highly fancied by the Americans, Alonso finished the first two hours of training in first place.
Servía completes a Spanish one-two
Fellow Spaniard Oriol Serviá sits in second place, having recorded a speed of 220.759 miles per hour (355.250 kilometers per hour). All in all, it was a fine way for Alonso to introduce himself to the folk of the famous oval.
