Celta appeal for penalty after Varane handball
Referee Martínez Munuera was unmoved by Celta Vigo's appeals, after Raphael Varane appeared to handle the ball. Aspas was booked for protests.
There was controversy at Balaídos in the first half of the match between Celta Vigo and Real Madrid.
Varane handball
In the 38th minute, Raphael Varane appeared to handle the ball after clever play by Jonny to burst towards the penalty box.
The Celta players appealed vociferously for a penalty, to the extent that a disbelieving Iago Aspas was shown a yellow card by Martínez Manuera for his protests.
While it was a clear handball, replays show that the contact took place outside the penalty box.
Ronaldo breaks Greaves' record
It was a record-breaking evening in Galicia for Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid forward opened the scoring in the tenth minute, to move ahead of Jimmy Greaves as the highest goalscorer in the top five European leagues.
The Portuguese doubled his tally for the evening shortly after half time, finishing an incisive counter-attack with a neat finish off the post.
