Cavani: PSG defeat to Barça in the Champions League was 'unjust'
Edinson Cavani spoke to L'Equipe about Paris Saint Germain's historic defeat to Barcelona, which the Uruguayan considers to have been an 'unfair' result.
Edinson Cavani, the Paris Saint Germain and Uruguay striker has spoken to French newspaper L’Equipe’ about how he saw his team’s historic collapse against Barcelona in the Champions League. With a 4-0 lead from the first leg of the Last 16, PSG conspired to lose 6-1 in Camp Nou, sealing their exit from the competition.
PSG defeat to Barcelona was unjust
Cavani, who joined PSG from Napoli in 2013, believes that the match at Camp Nou, in which Sergi Roberto scored the crucial sixth goal in stoppage time, was unjust.
“We were great in the home leg, and we didn’t deserve to be knocked out like that. Things happened that aren’t normal in football… we felt a great sadness, bitterness and rage”
He believes that the match will remain a painful wound for the Parisian club:
“It affected us all. Something happened that was unexpected and inexplicable. It was an injustice. You only have to turn on the television.
Cavani: nobody could have imagined what happened
Cavani, who scored a staggering 49 goals in all competitions for PSG during the 2016/17 season, thought that his goal at the Camp Nou would be the nail in the coffin for Barça.
“When I scored, I knew that we would have more space than Barcelona, who hadn’t been particularly effective, because they would have to attack. To be honest, at 3-1 nobody could have imagined the change.
“If I have to talk about what happened there, I’d like to talk about the injustice. The result wasn’t fair.”
