Spain captain Sergio Ramos spoke following La Roja’s victory in Macedonia, which brings the 2018 World Cup in Russia well within reach.

Silva and Costa score for Spain

Goals from David Silva and Diego Costa were enough to maintain Spain’s position at the top of Group G, level on 16 points with Italy.

“The objective was to get the three points in a tricky match,” said Ramos, “we knew that it wasn’t going to be easy. They tightened up in the second half, but we’re happy and looking forward to some rest.”

Spain will face Italy in their next competitive match, and will do so without any suspensions. Various Spanish players were one yellow card away from a ban, but all emerged unscathed from Skopje.

“It will be a complicated match, at home, against a great team. They won as well [against Lichtenstein] and we’re already thinking about how to be in the best possible shape. We’re one step away from the World Cup.”

Ramos congratulates Nadal

Ramos also took the time to congratulate Rafa Nadal, who won his 10th French Open title earlier in the day.

“He is a sporting icon in Spain, he’s one of the greats of Spanish sport, and besides, he’s a Madrid fan.”
