Nacho: "I'm with Ramos, we only need to change a few small things"
The Real Madrid defender was at the prsentation for their new shirt and spoke about the preseason and how happy he was with last season's success.
Nacho Fernandez was at the presentation for Real Madrid's new jerseys on Wednesday and spoke to the media about it, summer changes and next season.
What do you think of the new jersey?
I like it. Obviously, as a Madridista, I like the white more than anything. Adidas and Real Madrid always continue to innovate. Both of the jerseys are nice and everyone around the world will like it.
How do you see next season going? There are six titles to play for...
It will be difficult, like every year. It's clear that the season just finished was the best. Not only as a collective but at a personal level, things worked out very well too. The season coming is much more complicated as we have to retain our titles and that's always hard. We have strength, desire and lots of hope.
Last year was the best season for Nacho?
Without doubt, it was the most minutes I had played. I have always asked for time on the field based on my efforts and this season is when I have felt most important. With these teammates it is difficult to play, that is obvious. But yes, personally, I would say this year, and not just because I could offer something but because of the team we had and because we could achieve some big things.
The team could lose some components in the summer. What do you think?
Sergio Ramos came out and said the other day that we only need to change a few small things. I am with the captain. When things are going good and when you can manage to create a real unity in the group, that is important. We are not the one that deal with the signings and departures but if you ask me as a player in the squad, I would say we need to change very little.
In recent years, Real Madrid's defense has been applauded as much as the attack.
In any team, the defensive side is just as important or more than the attack, it's where you have to keep on working and at the end the goal is to not to concede goals. It's important that the defense works well and not just the defenders but the whole team like we did this year. And that is when good things happen.
How is the preseason at Real Madrid?
The preseason might just be the worst thing about football, it is when you run the most, we have training in the morning and in the evening. When you're done, you really want to go to bed straight away. Also, we have a really good physical trainer in Antonio (Pintus) who is doing some everything well. All of the players are happy with the coaching staff, which makes the preseason worthwhile and also prepares us for the upcoming season.
What are your goals for next season?
I wish all of the season finished the same way as the most recent one. We feel very proud to have achieve what we did, thankful too for the support of the fans, who have been there from the first day with us. I would sign up for it if the every year for the rest of my career was like last season. I can assure you that we have a lot of hope and desire that this team has the spark to go and achieve things. We have a very nice challenge laying ahead of us.
