A number of players have handed in written requests to leave their clubs but continue where they are - Diego Costa and Coutinho are just two examples.

According to Sky Sports, Philippe Coutinho reacted quickly to the statement issued by Liverpool this morning which said that the Brazilian would not be moving anywhere during the current transfer window with the player handing in a transfer request. The formal procedure, a request to leave, in writing, is only used in England and Coutinho is believed to put in such a request to propel his proposed move to Barcelona

Despite Coutinho's request, Liverpool are not obliged to sell the player. Other players to have asked to be put on the transfer list this summer include Leicester's Riyad Mahrez, Southampton's Virgil Van Dijk, Arsenal's Lucas Pérez and Diego Costa in the hope of speeding up their respective moves to Roma, Liverpool, Deportivo and Atlético. Yet all of them remain at their clubs with 20 days to go before the transfer window closes.

Players take a risk by handing in a transfer request in that they stand to lose any loyalty-related bonuses written into their contracts. Players who have moved after putting in a request in recent years include Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres, Gareth Bale, Raul Meireles and Nicolas Anelka. Some cases however, were not as fruitful - Luka Modric told Tottenham that he wanted to leave after receiving a tempting offer from Chelsea, but his plea fell on deaf ears with Spurs. A similar thing happened with Carlos Tévez when he begged Manchester City to release him but continued playing until the following transfer window.
