Villa: "The injury is a shame because I was really enjoying myself"

David Villa spoke to Cuatro at the airport before he left the Spanish national team following an injury to his thigh in training that ruled him out of the Lichtenstein game on Tuesday night. The former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid striker was wistful but holds hope of another call-up provided he can continue to play well and

The asturiano said, "it's a shame because I was really enjoying myself, aside from that last play in training". Villa explained how he injured himself and said, "I tried to reach for a ball and I stretched the muscle just a little to far" as he heads back to New York for treatment and to be ready for his club side's next game versus Sporting KC on Thursday. Spain and manager Julen Lopetegui were initially optimistic that he would make the trip to Lichtenstein but decided not to take the risk and sent him back to the States but that could be good news for New York City FC.

Despite the injury, the striker who played in the last couple of minutes against Italy says, "I am grateful that the manager called on me and that I have spent the last number of days here. The thing that I can control is to recover properly and to get back on the field and continue playing well".
