Manolo Márquez has stepped down as head coach of UD Las Palmas after just two months in charge, the LaLiga outfit confirmed on Tuesday morning.

In a statement, Las Palmas revealed that Márquez tendered his resignation to club president Miguel Ángel Ramírez on Monday evening, a day after the Canary Islanders' 2-0 home defeat to Leganés.

Resignation comes after weekend home defeat to Leganés

Sunday's loss, Las Palmas' fourth reverse in six league games so far this season, left Los Amarillos in 15th in the Spanish top flight.

Márquez had been a surprise choice to replace Quique Setién in July, having led the club's 'B' team, Las Palmas Atlético, to promotion from Tercera División last term.

Márquez to return to Las Palmas youth set-up

The 49-year-old is to remain at the Estadio Gran Canaria, moving back into Las Palmas' youth set-up with a role in the development and recruitment department.

Assistant coaches Juan Carlos Valerón and Francisco Ortiz are to take interim charge of first-team affairs until Márquez's replacement is appointed.
