Real Madrid players share goal-scoring burden while Cristiano Ronaldo falters
Zinedine Zidane's squad boasts more goal-scorers than any other LaLiga club in 2017-18, although their statistics in front of goal are down on last year.
Real Madrid’s incisive touch in front of goal has been called in to doubt in the opening months of the 2017-18 season. Los Blancos have scored 18 goals in nine LaLiga matches, their worst return since Fabio Capello occupied the dugout in 2006.
While Cristiano Ronaldo has not been contributing goals at the rate to which we are accustomed, Zinedine Zidane’s squad have been sharing goal-scoring duties. The French coach can count on a long list of players who have already opened their account for the season.
Real Madrid equal with Celta Vigo for goals scored
Real Madrid are joint-fifth in terms of goals scored in LaLiga, along with Celta Vigo. Barcelona (26), Valencia (25), Real Sociedad (20), and Real Betis (20) are all ahead. The reigning champions have found it uncharacteristically difficult to find the net. Against Getafe, Cristiano Ronaldo had to wait until the last five minutes of the match to score the winner. Real Betis prevented Madrid from scoring at all while inflicting a first defeat of the season on the Bernabéu club.
Across all competitions, Real Madrid have scored 32 goals, which is four goals less than at the same date last season, at which point Zidane’s side had played two games less.
Zidane's rotation has shared goal-scoring burden
Despite that, Real Madrid are the club with the most goal-scorers in LaLiga. Zidane’s staunch commitment to rotation has undoubtedly encouraged that weight-sharing, with various players given the chance to try their luck.
Marcelo is the most recent player to open his account. The Brazilian scored his first goal of the season against Eibar on Sunday. In total, 11 players have scored in LaLiga: Asensio (3), Bale (2), Isco (2), Ceballos (2), Ronaldo (1), Benzema (1), Mayoral (1), Lucas Vázquez (1), Casemiro (1), Marcelo (1), and Kroos (1).
Real Sociedad (10) are the second-placed team in terms of the number of players who have scored. After the Basque team come Barcelona and Valencia (9); Atlético, Getafe, and Celta (8); Deportivo, Sevilla, and Betis (7); Leganés and Villarreal (6); Girona and Athletic (5); Levante and Las Palmas (4); and Espanyol, Eibar, Alavés, and Málaga (3).
