Luis Suárez insists the ball had crossed the line against Depor

Barcelona were once again left scratching their heads as to why what they felt was a perfectly legal goal was ruled out when Luis Suárez claimed his shot was over the line in this evening's meeting with Deportivo. It's the third time that Barça have felt they have had such a decision go against them - it happened at Mestalla last month and at the Benito Villamarín last season. Today's incident will reignite the debate on whether VAR, which is due to be implemented in Spanish football next year, should be ditched in favour of goal-line technology which is in use in England.
Goal-line technology not in use in Spain
If on both of the previous incidents - against Betis and Valencia, the ball clearly crossed the line completely, the same cannot be said of Luis Suárez effort tonight. Depor keeper Rubén dived to claw the ball out without knowing whether it had fully entered or not. AS' in-house referee Eduardo Iturralde González was hesitant to confirm that the goal should have been given: "These kinds of incidents can happen when a league title is in play. Goal-line technology might only resolve 5% of the cases but it could be decisive. With the television images we have of Suárez's effort, you cannot say for certain whether the ball was over or not. Camp Nou, a stadium which is recognized by UEFA as being able to host Champions League football is prepared to install goal-line technology but LaLiga won't allow it".
