Zidane's Real Madrid equals negative record of Mourinho

Los Blancos left Cornellà on Tuesday night following another defeat and further points dropped in LaLiga. Cristiano had been left at home to watch as an unwanted record was reached.

As snow brings much of Europe to a halt, there is another white stoppage taking place in LaLiga. In Cornellà on Tuesday evening, Real Madrid equalled an unwanted negative record that fans haven't seen since the time of José Mourinho.

Madrid six without scoring

The defeat against Espanyol was the sixth league match this season in which Zidane's team has failed to register a goal. The last time this happened was in the 2010-2011 campaign, the first of those with the Portuguese coach on the bench.

It was just a few months ago when the opposite story was being told about Madrid's exploits in front of goal. Up until the Real Betis defeat (0-1) of LaLiga Matchday 5, Los Blancos had gone 73 consecutive games scoring, across all competitions. This record-breaking streak extended across three seasons: from the victory (0-1) over Real Sociedad in Anoeta with a Gareth Bale goal on April 30, 2016 until the 1-3 away victory on September 17, 2017.

The six games of this campaign where they have fired blanks have been divided equally: three at the Santiago Bernabéu and three away from home. Four ended in defeat with two other no score draws.

Mourinho's previous dry record

In Mourinho's first season in Madrid, his side's six were heavily weighted to away games - including the 5-0 hammering at the Camp Nou - with the only home impotency against against Sporting (0-1). It was a significant one though as it ended Mourinho's nine-year streak as a manager without losing at home in national competitions. During that 2010-2011 season under the now-Man Utd coach, Madrid also failed to score in a Champions League match (0-2 in the first leg of the semi-final against Barcelona) and two in the Copa del Rey (0-0 Murcia and 2-0 Levante in earlier rounds).
