South African striker Erasmus signs for AFC Eskilstuna in Swedish second division

Bafana Bafana striker Kermit Erasmus has signed for AFC Eskilstuna in Sweden’s Superettan, the country’s second division, confirmed the club on its official website.

The 27-year-old South Africa international signed a two-year deal with the Swedish side.

Back in February, soon after the closing of the transfer window, Erasmus was released by French club Stade Rennais, where over 13 appearances he failed to score.

The move to Sweden ends speculation about Erasmus’ possible return to South Africa.

“It was a difficult decision to make” – Erasmus

Discussing his move to AFC Eskilstuna, Erasmus told the club’s official website: 'I hope to win the love of fans through my goals. It was a difficult decision to make, but there is a good opportunity for me to play again.

“I have not played football for a few months so I have a lot of desire. I just want to be happy to do something that I like.'

Erasmus, who began his career at South Africa’s Supersport United, joined Dutch giants Feyernoord in 2008.

In 2010 he returned to Supersport United, where he made over 50 league appearances and scored 14 goals before moving to Orlando Pirates.

With the Johannesburg side, Erasmus proved to be a fruitful striker, scoring 17 times over 65 appearances and winning the Nedbank Cup in 2014.

In 2016, he signed for Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais, where after two unfortunate seasons, he was released from his contract.

Since making his international debut in 2010, Erasmus has won 14 caps for the South Africa national football team, scoring twice.
