New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft told The Athletic that he does not currently feel the need to address Tom Brady's contract, which has two years remaining.
'He'll be 41 when the season starts,' Kraft said, per The Athletic. 'Neither side has an issue with it. If it becomes an issue, we'll deal with it.' In previous years, Brady has typically agreed to extensions with the Patriots while he has two years remaining on his deal. With his advancing age, however, it appears his status won't be addressed as proactively.
Brady, who turns 41 on Aug. 3, is set to make $15 million in 2018, tied with Cam Newton and Philip Rivers for 18th among NFL quarterbacks. He is scheduled to make the same figure in 2019, which currently ties Alex Smith for 21st among signal-callers. Brady will count $22 million against the Patriots' cap in both seasons, which ranks 11th in 2018 and 14th in 2019.
Kraft added that he hopes Brady plays 'as long as he can.' 'I don't think anyone would have believed 10 years ago that he would have played this year, gone to the Super Bowl and been MVP of the league at 40 years old,' Kraft said. 'It's just unbelievable. It speaks to the way he takes care of himself, the way he trains, how much film he watches, one of the hardest working guys. He is driven to excel. 'I think as long as he feels he is like that, he'll keep playing. We're so lucky to have him in our system.'
