Julio César, who was between the sticks when Brazil beat Spain in the final of the 2013 Confederations Cup, has revealed he received a message from José Mourinho after paying tribute to former Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas after the game in the Maracanã by wearing a shirt bearing his opposite number’s name.

Casillas had been frozen out at the Bernabéu in the 2012-13 season with Mourinho relegating him to the bench in favour of Diego López. And after César’s dedication to his colleague, “for everything he had achieved” during his career, the keeper was surprised to find a message from the Portuguese coach on his mobile.

Mourinho: "You're mad. Casillas should be wearing your shirt"

“When I got to the dressing room I saw a message from Mourinho on my phone,” César, who is currently at Flamengo, said during an interview with SporTV. “He had been having problems with Casillas at Real Madrid. What he said was: ‘You’re mad. He should be putting on your shirt, not the other way around. You’re a batter keeper with one arm than he is.’”

César, who won the Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia treble under Mourinho in 2009-10, also made an observation about the Portuguese’s management style. “Mourinho likes to get in the faces of those players who are considered stars at the teams that he manages.”
