Arsenal set to appoint Unai Emery as Wenger's successor
After considering all of the candidates, among them Mikel Arteta, the Gunners have decided to bring in the ex-PSG boss, according to the BBC.
Arsenal may have found a successor for long-serving manager Arsène Wenger in Unai Emery. According to the BBC's David Ornstein, the Gunners have decided on the former Sevilla and PSG boss to take over the reins and an official statement is expected later this week.
Arsenal's board met to weigh up all of the candidates for the job, among them, Mikel Arteta but decided that the more experienced Emery, who guided Sevilla to three consecutive Europa League triumphs, is the right man for the job.
Emery's manegerial career started in 2004 with regional division outfit Lorca FC. His good work in Murcia was noted by Almería who brought him on board in 2006. It proved a masterstroke - the team was promoted to the top flight in his first season, finishing runners-up in May 2007. His big break came the following year when he joined Valencia at the start of the 2008/09 season. He spent four seasons at Mestalla, leaving to take the Spartak Moscow job after being sacked in 2012.
His time in Russia was short-lived but another door opened when Sevilla took a chance on him to take over from Míchel who was handed his papers after a 2-0 defeat to Valencia left the team in the lower half of the table. From that moment on, Emery's career really took off. He guided the team to success in the Europa League, winning the trophy in 2014, 2015 and 2016. The team were also runners-up in the Copa del Rey in 2015-16.
That led top him being offered the PSG job, but he was constantly in the eye of the storm in Paris. Despite achieving great success at national level - one Ligue 1 title, two Coupes de la Ligue, two Coupes de France and two Trophées des Champions, it wasn't enough to make up for the disastrous exits in the Champions League to Barcelona and Real Madrid at the first knockout stage.
The decision to appoint him at Arsenal was taken by club CEO Ivan Gazidis; Director of Football Raül Sanllehí; and Head of Recruitment Sven Mislintat.
