Julen Lopetegui extends Spain contract up to Euro 2020
Incoming RFEF chief Luis Rubiales will make the announcement official at midday on Tuesday, tying the coach to La Roja until the European Championship.
Julen Lopetegui’s decision to remain with the Spain national side until the 2020 European Championship will be officially announced at midday on Tuesday by new Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales.
“He was my preferred choice [before the RFEF elections] and he’s my preferred choice now,” said Rubiales a day earlier after Lopetegui announced his Spain squad for the 2018 World Cup.
Lopetegui will therefore remain in charge until the end of Euro 2020, which will be the first to be staged in multiple countries.
RFEF sporting director Fernando Hierro is also expected to extend his contract in line with Lopetegui.
The current Spain boss will be taking charge of the 2010 World Cup winners at a major tournament for the first time in Russia after replacing Vicente del Bosque after the defending champions’ disappointing campaign in Brazil four years earlier, when La Roja failed to get beyond the group stage.
