Champions League final

Mazic, the referee who left Cristiano raging at the World Cup

Milorad Mazic is refereeing the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool. Ronaldo will remember him from Germany's 4-0 thrashing of Portugal in Brazil 2014.

When Cristiano Ronaldo sees the referee, Milorad Mazic, for tonight's Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool, he'll almost certainly remember the World Cup in Brazil in 2014. Four years ago, Serbian referee Mazic took charge of Germany - Portugal, which finished with Ronaldo's side losing 4-0 and being eliminated from the tournament. Ronaldo was so enraged by the performance of the referee that he exploded in a manner that's not been seen many times.

The Real Madrid legend was furious at Mazic's performance, with the Serbian referee making several controversial decisions which went against Portugal. First of all he gave a dubious penalty in favour of Goetze in the 10th minute, which gave Germany a 1-0 lead. Subsequently, at 2-0, he sent Pepe off, after a controversial scuffle with Muller, which saw the German collapsing with his hands to his face, before faking a headbutt from the Portuguese player after their heads touched when an angry Pepe bent down to give the German an earful for making the most of the initial challenge.

Portugal knocked out of Brazil 2014

Portugal were left without a hope of turning the scoreline around and the defeat saw them bundled out of the tournament, on the same points as the USA, but with a worse goal difference, meaning they finished third in Group G.

Paulo Bento let fly in the direction of Mazic after the game. "In those two situations the referee showed he was biased", said the Portugal coach. "The sending off was forced by the German player and I don't know if was due to Pepe's reputation..."

Mazic also criticised for Iran - Argentina

Mazic was also on the end of criticism for his performance in the Iran - Argentina game, with the Persian side sending a formal complaint to FIFA. Their coach Carlos Queiroz said: "Will this man be able to sleep tonight? Or for the rest of his life?". All of which led to Mazic being voted the Worst Referee at the World Cup on the website redcardtheref.com, with 86,000 votes out a total of 110,000.
