Referee Clos Gómez to train Spain World Cup squad on VAR
At the request of manager Julen Lopetegui, VAR expert Clos Gómez will be looking to give De Gea, Piqué, Ramos, Costa and the rest a World Cup advantage.
Spanish referee Carlos Clos Gomez will instruct the Spain national football team on the Video Assistant Referee ahead of this summer's World Cup in Russia.
VAR masterclass for La Roja
According to AS sources, the Aragonese official is to give a masterclass on how VAR will be used in Fifa's showpiece tournament to Julen Lopetegui's squad before they travel to Krasnodar, La Roja's base camp, on Thursday 7 June.
There will be a special element to the classes for players who play in critical positions, where VAR is more likely to play a part. This will focus on goalkeepers, central defenders and the strikers. David De Gea; Gerard Piqué, Sergio Ramos and Diego Costa will be given especially clear guidance.
Lopetegui asked Velasco Carballo, the new refereeing president in Spain, for the extra tuition and he in turn delegated the responsibility to Clos, who will be Director of VAR in next season's LaLiga campaign. The instructions have been scheduled for when the five recently crowned European champions join up with the squad following Real Madrid commitments.
Speaking on this topic Julen Lopetegui was clear that VAR will play an important role in the World Cup.
"VAR will influence and will condition many of the World Cup matches. For example, VAR involves stopping and restarting, which will kill the continuity of the game. Spain must be prepared for this new scenario. We are going to prepare for VAR, for stoppages and starts."
VAR can be taken advantage of
In addition, the coach believes that VAR will influence results and goals, and he backed this up with statistics.
"I have analysed the leagues that have used VAR and I have seen that there have been a lot of goals after the stoppages due to VAR, where some teams have known how to take advantage of it, and others have suffered. For this reason we must prepare for the new scenario."
