Real Madrid have confirmed that they are to unveil Julen Lopetegui as their new head coach at 19:00 CEST this evening, just a day after he was dramatically sacked as Spain boss over his appointment at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Lopetegui dismissed by Spain on eve of World Cup

Lopetegui was fired by Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales following Tuesday's shock announcement - made only three days before Spain's World Cup campaign gets underway against near neighbours Portugal - that he was to replace Zinedine Zidane in the Real dugout after the finals.

In his absence, Fernando Hierro will now take charge of La Roja at Russia 2018.

In the wake of his sacking, a visibly upset Lopetegui left the team's tournament base in Krasnodar and returned to Spain - telling reporters, "I'm very sad, but let's hope we win the World Cup" - and Real quickly moved to bring forward his unveiling.

Lopetegui's first press conference since Spain sacking

Despite Lopetegui only arriving back in the country at just before 5 o'clock this morning, it was finally agreed to hold the event today.

On the back of Rubiales' press conference explaining the decision to fire him, Lopetegui will now have his chance to give his version of events, in what will be the first time he has faced the media since his dismissal by Spain.
