WORLD CUP 2018

Messi the first to miss a penalty at 2018 World Cup Russia

The Argentina ace stepped up to the spot on 64 minutes after Magnusson brought Meza down. Messi's effort was saved by Iceland keeper Hannes Halldorsson.

The dubious honour of being the first player to miss a penalty at 2018 World Cup Russia went to, believe it or not - Leo Messi. Argentina were awarded a spot-kick on 64 minutes when Magnusson brought Maximiliano Meza down in the box with the score locked at 1-1. Messi sent the resulting penalty to the right hand side of Hannes Halldorsson but the keeper guessed correctly and parried the ball to safety.

Argentina's woe from the penalty spot

Messi can take solace in the fact that he is not alone - Ariel Ortega was the last Argentina player to fluff a penalty in a World Cup finals. He watched in horror as his 88th spot-kick in the 2002 group game against Sweden was saved by Magnus Hedman, only for Hernán Crespo to save the day by tucking in the follow-up to earn the Albiceleste a draw.

Messi's unlucky run

Messi's effectiveness from 11 yards has dipped in recent years - he's missed four of the last seven penalties that he has taken for club and country. We're unsure of what the odds of Cristiano to take and score the first penalty at 2018 Russia and Messi being the first to miss one, but the Portuguese player started out at 12/1 to end as the tournament's top scorer while Messi was at 9/1, however after hitting a hat trick against Spain, the Real Madrid player is now  at 2/1 while Messi has fallen to 16/1.
