Brazilian media troll revenge on Toni Kroos after Germany exit
The shock group stage elimination of the German national team at the World Cup in Russia has opened the door for some tweeting retaliation to the Real Madrid man.
Germany started as one of the favourites for the 2018 World Cup title in Russia, but on Wednesday afternoon in Kazan they suffered the same curse that has befallen three of the last four holders. Their elimination from the group stage, something that had not happened since 1938, was the biggest shock of the tournament.
South Korea hand Germans early exit
Joachim Löw's team needed to beat South Korea to advance to the round of 16 and against all the odds - even the predictions of the Asian side's own manager - they failed to do so, losing 0-2 and finishing bottom of a group that had seemed far from difficult just a few weeks ago.
The elimination of the Maanschaft has provoked all kinds of reactions throughout the world, both in the written press and on social media. In Brazil, a country that suffered so much pain at the hands of the European heavyweights in their 1-7 defeat in 2014 World Cup semi-final, what transpired in Russia is fair game for revenge mockery.
Brazil media Kroos revenge
The Brazilian sports media LANCE wasn't slow to remind German midfielder Toni Kroos of the new year's message he dedicated to the Seleção almost a year and a half ago. Back then the Real Madrid man wished a "Happy 2017" to Twitter users but replaced the last two numbers with the flags of Brazil and Germany - a clear reminder of the host's 2014 mauling.
That message caused uproar and even had his Madrid teammate Marcelo, one of the failing stars of that Brazil side, asking for some "respect for others" via social networks. After the message from Marcelo, and seeing all the commotion that he'd generated, Kroos posted another tweet clarifying that it was "simply a joke". Well, LANCE has used the latest turn of events for trolling revenge.
Following the same style as Kroos, LANCE posted a new message with "Happy 2018" but this time the first two digit have been replaced with the flags of South Korea and Germany signifying the 2-0 scoreline.
In addition to this, LANCE also dedicated another very poignant message to Toni Kroos, dismissing him from the World Cup in Russian, again using an old tweet of the player.
He who mocks last, mocks longest
And it didn't stop there. Globo and Fox Sports Brazil also got in on the act of mocking Germany, openly laughing out loud when South Korea scored their first goal and launching a painful survey.
Twitter never forgets, kids, so be careful what you post. As the old saying almost goes, 'he who mocks last, mocks longest.'
