WORLD CUP 2018
Modric and Mbappe snap up individual World Cup awards
Modric was named as the player of the tournament and Mbappe was named as the young player of the tournament despite contrasting luck in the World Cup final.
Luka Modric was on the losing side at the Luzhniki on Sunday in Moscow. He was rewarded for his individual performance, however, picking up the Player of the Tournament award. Modric, at 32 years of age, dragged his country to the World Cup final after a difficult group stage and three knockout ties that all went to extra time - two of them went to penalties.
The Real Madrid midfielder played every minute of his side's seven games and score two goals. His teammates and manager were talking up his credentials for the award before the final but the former refugee who rose to become one of the greatest footballers in the world was only concerned, however, with lifting the World Cup. He couldn't manage that and the player of the World Cup award might not mean much in light of that but it is a sign of just how influential he was for the underdogs who nobody gave a chance.
Mbappe seals Young Player of the Tournament
It hardly needed confirmation but Kylian Mbappe sealed the Young Player of the Tournament on Sunday. He scored France's fourth becoming the second youngest player to ever score in the World Cup final and finished the competition with four goals and also became the third youngest player to ever appear in a World Cup final. He became the youngest teen since Pele to score a brace when he did just that against Argentina. He was magnificent throughout and luckily for fans of football, this is just the beginning of what will be a long career of award, trophies and plaudits.
