Cristiano Ronaldo held his first press conference as a Juventus player on Monday and spoke about his ambitions with his new club, with whom he has signed a four-year-contract. The Serie A champions paid a total fee of 117 million euros for the 33-year-old and Ronaldo will earn 30 million euros per season at the Allianz Stadium, a considerable outlay but one that the Juve board hope will return La Vecchia Signora to the summit of European football.

Juve have not won the Champions League since 1996 and have been runners-up on five occasions since then. In the most recent of those finals in 2017, a Ronaldo double helped Real Madrid to victory and now Juve have added the five-times Ballon d’Or to their ranks he will be expected to lead the Italians to European glory as he has done at Madrid in recent years, winning four Champions Leagues in his past five seasons at the Bernabéu.

That Real Madrid made a profit on a player they broke the world transfer record for nine years ago is testament to Ronaldo’s enduring prowess on the pitch. His marketability will also give Italian football a boost in terms of international recognition with LaLiga and the Premier League enjoying the lion’s share of the sponsorship spoils and global television revenues in recent years.
