REAL MADRID-ROMA

Ramos takes Griezmann to task over 'top table' comment

“Ignorance can be brash and he should listen to the likes of Simeone, Godín or Koke" affirmed the Real Madrid captain ahead of the AS Roma clash.

Sergio Ramos spoke to the assembled media as Real Madrid prepare their opening game in the 2018/19 Champions League group stage against AS Roma.

Triple Champions League winners: “I agree with the coach, it's both a source of pride and a degree of responsibility to defend the title for three years back to back. Winning three Champions League titles was no coincidence and we need to maintain a hunger and desire to keep being the best side in Europe”

Griezmann now sits at the top table with Cristiano and Messi?: “Good question. Ignorance can be brash. When I hear this guy speak, it reminds me of players such as Totti, Raúl, Buffon, Casillas, Maldini, Xavi or Iniesta, players who have won many awards and titles but never a Ballón d'Or. Everyone has freedom of speech but he should listen to the likes of Simeone, Godín or Koke, people with decent principles as it would serve him well. Having said that I do feel he is a great player".

The final being staged at the Wanda: "Irrespective of the venue for the final, a club like Real Madrid are obliged to defend the title and it's an added incentive that the game will be held at the ground of our city rivals”.

Messi is desperate to win the Champions League: "Barcelona are always a direct rival and one of the favourites and it's totally normal that their star players have the appetite to win this competition".

Copa del Rey or Champions League: "I'd personally prefer to win the Champions whilst appreciate that all competitions are important. It's far from easy to win the Champions and that gives it more prestige so I can assure that Isco and the rest of the guys would rather win one  Champions League over three Copas del Rey".

The absence of Cristiano: “He was a legend and record breaker at the club but that's all past tense now. He leaves a big gap behind but that's been covered by players with a huge appetite to compete. We'll always dearly love these top players, but when they go we need to move on. I wish him well except for the time when our paths may cross”.
