Professional Football League (LFP) chief Javier Tebas has responded to Florentino Pérez after the Real Madrid president stated that his club would “categorically refuse” to play official league matches in the US as proposed under a deal recently signed between the LFP and US media and entertainment company Relevent – reminding Pérez that the it is the same firm responsible for handling Real’s annual tours of the states.

“Firstly,” the LaLiga chief said, “playing a game in Miami is voluntary and is no club is obliged to do so. Secondly, I would like to point out that this proposal to play Liga games in the USA came into being over a year ago with exactly the same company that organizes Real Madrid’s pre-season tours of the United States.”

The game currently on the table to be staged in Miami this season is Girona against Barcelona, which corresponds to week 21 of the Liga fixture schedule. Both clubs have agreed in principle to the idea and have given written confirmation to the Spanish Football Federation of their willingness to stage the game overseas.

“When all of this is concluded the time will come to fully explain everything, but now is not the time.”
