Brazil legend Ronaldo, who recently assumed control of Real Valladolid as majority shareholder and chairman of the board, spoke to the Spanish media for the first time since his eyebrow-raising acquisition last month after watching from the stands as the Pucelanos won a third consecutive Liga fixture to rise to seventh in the table going into the international break.

In the mixed zone at the José Zorrilla, Ronaldo expressed his satisfaction at recent results under manager Sergio González. “I’m very happy, these were three very important points and a third straight win. We had control of the game and I liked the way we played a lot. We’ll go into the international break very satisfied and from what I’ve seen, above all, with the attitude of the team. The coach and the players have given it everything. We have to carry on like this until the end of the season, approaching every game as if it is a final right up to the end. If we carry on like this, we’ll stay up.”

The former striker, who played for Real Madrid and Barcelona in LaLiga as well as PSV, AC Milan, Inter and Corinthians, has said he will get in shape and strap on his boots to lend a hand in training and has been biting his nails in the stands along with the Valladolid fans as he watches his side attempt to beat the drop. “Yes, I suffered the tension of the game, but the truth is we controlled it well and they didn’t have many chances. But yes, there was a lot of tension because the three points were up for grabs. There is a lot at stake and there are nerves, but I enjoyed it. There’s a great atmosphere in the stadium and we have to make the most of that.”

A crowd of 17,300 turned out for the game and Ronaldo highlighted the importance of their backing to the side’s chances of remaining in the top flight. “There’s a very strong bond with the fans and the players know what they have to do. There’s an extraordinary atmosphere on and off the pitch. We have a lot of work to do to keep on improving our players, they deserve it.”
