Lucas Hernández: Real Madrid wanted me, defender confirms
The Atlético man has told Radio Monte Carlo that he did not consider following brother Theo to the LaLiga club's near neighbours.
Atlético Madrid's Lucas Hernández has confirmed that Real Madrid wanted to sign him last summer and were considering triggering his 80m-euro release clause - having paid brother Theo's Rojiblanco buy-out figure the previous year - but that he had no interest in the advances of his club's city rivals.
"I didn't pay too much attention" to Real Madrid offer
The 22-year-old, who can operate both in central defence and at left-back - a role he fulfilled for France in the country's World Cup-winning campaign at Russia 2018 - told an interview with Radio Monte Carlo: "I didn't pay too much attention [to the offer]. I was 100% focused on my club, where I had recently signed a new contract.
"I'm an honest person and I couldn't go to Real Madrid"
"My agent told me about it. When he said there was an opportunity to go to Real Madrid, I told him I couldn't do that. Atlético are my club, a team who have given me everything. I'm an honest person and I couldn't go to Madrid. I hope I can stay here for a very long time, but football moves very fast. If an offer comes in that I can't refuse..."
Hernández has established himself as a fixture for Atleti, which in turn has enabled him to become a regular for Les Bleus (with 14 caps so far). This season, he has made seven club appearances in all competitions - amassing a total of 621 minutes of action - with his rapid progress leading him to be seen as one of world football's hottest young defensive properties.
