Kohli becomes fastest batsman to reach 10,000 ODI runs
Indian captain Virat Kohli has broken Sachin Tendulkar's record as the fastest batsman to score 10,000 ODI runs.
Indian captain Virat Kohli became the fastest batsman to reach 10,000 one-day international runs on Wednesday against West Indies in Visakhapatnam, east India.
The 29-year-old achieved the feat in his 205th innings, surpassing the previous record-holder, India legend Sachin Tendulkar, who did it after 259 innings in 2001.
The right-handed went past the 81 runs he needed, eventually scoring 157 not out against West Indies.
The crucial single run came against spinner Ashley Nurse.
He becomes the 13th batsman to reach the ODI milestone, and the fifth Indian to do so.
"It's an incredible achievement by Virat to complete 10,000 runs ODI before he is even 30 years old. It's only expected that Virat will reach many more batting milestones in future," BCCI acting president CK Khanna said.
Fastest in terms of time
Kohli is also the fastest in terms of time taken to score the runs, as he reached the milestone in 10 years and 67 days.
He made his debut against Sri Lanka in August 2008.
Tendulkar had taken 11 years and 103 days to reach the 10,000 milestone.
The second ODI between India and West Indies ended in a tie, with the South Asians leading the five-match series 1-0.
