PSG ready to snatch De Jong from under Barcelona's nose
According to De Telegraaf, PSG are willing to reach Ajax's asking price of 75 million euros, a figure which may be beyond Barcelona's resources.
Barcelona have had their sights set on signing young Ajax star Frenkie De Jong for some time now. The Dutch midfielder, along with his team mate Matthijs De Light and PSG’s Adrien Rabiot are amongst the LaLiga club’s top priorities as they look to strengthen their squad for next season.
Manchester City and Real Madrid are also understood to be interested in signing De Jong. Although Madrid’s interest has been passive up to now; while City may have to pull out of the race due to the current UEFA Financial Fair Play investigation into their transfer dealings.
With that, it seems that Barcelona’s stiffest competition for his signature will come from PSG. According to Dutch paper De Telegraaf, PSG are willing to pay up 75 million euros for De Jong, who is considered one of the world’s most promising young players in his position. The Paris club will be conscious of the fact they could lose Rabiot to Barcelona, and would see De Jong as a fitting replacement.
Barcelona may struggle to match PSG's offer
Ajax has reportedly set De Jong’s price at 75 million euro, a figure that could be deemed too high for Barcelona. If PSG are willing to pay the asking price, it would be a difficult offer to reject for Ajax, who recently posted a picture of De Jong and De Ligt (whose price they have set at 65 million euros) on their twitter page with the message: “They’re not going to Spain”.
The message was accompanied by a money bag emoji, which could perhaps be a subtle hint that Barcelona do not have resources to meet Ajax’s asking price, leaving the door open to PSG’s billionaire Qatari owners.
