Inter's UCL exit reopens door for possible Icardi move to Madrid
Despite a respectable performance from the player netting four games in six games, the striker will have to settle for the Europa League...unless he fancies a change of scene.
Mauro Icardi will wake up today knowing that his Champions League dream, for another year has ended as Barcelona and Tottenham were the sides to progress from Group B with his Inter side having to console themselves with the Europa League after failing to beat PSV at San Siro last night. The latest setback for the Argentine will do little in reactivating speculation that has seen him heavily linked with a move to the Bernabeu in the past.
The Inter striker is having a solid season in the black and blue stripes, bagging four times in the Champions League and hitting the target 12 times in Serie A. His tally is two more than Madrid striker Benzema (in four games less) and five more than Welsh striker Gareth Bale.
"I wanted to get Inter back in the Champions League and we achieved that. Now I want to claim silverware with this club. I don't feel it's the right time for me to leave, given recent results", these were the words from the striker just over a week ago. Inter currently lie third in Serie A, six points behind Napoli in second and trail leaders Juve by 14 points. The Champions League exit is a major blow for the club and player and may just be a key factor in the Argentine forward deeming that the time has come to make the move to the Spanish capital.
