Modric rejects new Real Madrid contract - reports
The current Ballon d'Or holder has refused to countenance the opening offer from the Bernabéu.
According to regional TV channel Telemadrid, Luka Modric has rejected Real Madrid's opening contract renewal offer. The 33-year-old current Ballon d'Or holder is under contract at the Bernabéu through to 2020 and has apparently declined Madrid's new terms at the same time as he is examining what is said to be studying a succulent offer from Inter Milan. The Italian club are said to have put a two year, 10-million-euro-a-seaon deal on the table. After that would be a move to China for a further couple of years, before presumably retiring.
Inter Milan wanted Modric
Last summer Inter made a determined attempt to land the midfielder. On Wednesday, Piero Ausilio, sporting director at Inter said: "I didn't think it was possible to sign Modric, but why not dream? I only said to the person who proposed [the idea] to me that we would be there, that if what we were being told was true they would have to talk to Madrid and let us know. To be honest, we didn't feel ready for such a negotiation because we were aware of our limitations. Would we try again? In football today you can never say never..."
According to Telemadrid, Modric is waiting for an increased offer from Real Madrid, however the numbers involved have not been released. If the number 10 wants to leave, Madrid could be forced to sell him in the summer to ward off the possibility of him leaving for free the season after. Meanwhile, at the Bernabéu the executives are relaxed about the situation, and believe that a deal will be done to keep Modric at Madrid.
