Saúl sustained post-traumatic thigh injury against Girona, medical reports confirm
The injury headaches continue to grow for coach Diego Simeone, as Saul joins the already side-lined Felipe, Savic, Vitolo and Diego Costa.
Atletico Madrid’s Saúl has undergone tests that have confirmed that the midfielder sustained a “high-grade, post-traumatic” thigh injury in his side’s Copa del Rey tie against Girona on Wednesday.
Saúl had to be taken off after receiving a hit to the leg in the a game which ended 3-3, but saw Atlético eliminated from the competition on the away goal ruling, following a 1-1 draw at Girona in the first leg. The midfielder was seen to be limping and in clear discomfort when he left the pitch in the 55th minute.
“Saúl Ñíguez has undergone this Thursday an MRI scan… our midfielder suffered a post-traumatic myofascial injury to his thigh. He is pending clinical evaluation,” Atlético stated on its official website.
Although the club has not given an official return date, it is unlikely he will be available for Atlético’s clash with Huesca this weekend, and the recommendation from the club would be that he works to be fit again for the game against Getafe on January 26.
