With Atlético’s signing of Álvaro Morata from Chelsea to be made official this week, there is more good news for the club as long-term manager Diego Simeone has agreed to extend his deal by one year to keep him at the Wanda Metropolitano until 2021.

The club is not set to announce the news until February, but AS has learned that president Miguel Ángel Gil Marín and Simeone’s agent and sister, Natalia Simeone, who have been negotiating the over Argentine coach’s conditions, have finally come to an agreement.

One of the principal demands of Simeone was a broad refurbishment of the squad, in which the Chelsea striker was a fundamental condition to help Atlético’s aspirations to win LaLiga this season and especially in their bid to reach the final of the Champions League, which will be played at the Wanda.

But it’s likely the extension will be his last, as the Argentine coach has made no secret of his desire to return his former playing club, Inter Milan.

“I think I have been very clear about this, I must have said it 2,000 times, about my return to Inter. There’s no need to say it again. It will definitely happen,” said Simeone when asked about his future in December.

But for next two and half seasons, all his focus will be on bringing more silverware to the club at which he has grown his legacy since 2011.
