Real Madrid: Reguilón to be rewarded with improved deal

Sergio Reguilón has emerged as one of the bright spots of Real Madrid’s 2018-19 season to date, the 22-year-old impressing at the Bernabéu to the extent that Santiago Solari has all-but anointed the academy graduate as his first choice at left back ahead of Marcelo.

The Brazil international full-back has not featured for a single minute of Real’s last two league games with Reguilón preferred for the victories against Betis and Sevilla and the opening leg of the Copa del Rey tie against Leganés.

Since Solari took the reins at Madrid, Regiulón has played 701 minutes of senior football and the side’s defensive record has improved with the canterano on the pitch, Real conceding just four goals at a rate of one every 201 minutes with Reguilón in the side.

Solari said recently that he would prefer the naturally attack-minded Marcelo to pay more attention to his defensive duties and Reguilón, who is not so cavalier in his positioning, has reaped the benefit.

As such, the Bernabéu board have decided to reward the academy graduate with an improved contract. Reguilón’s current deal runs until June 2020 but Real are prepared to table an extension offer and a significant pay rise to ensure his future remains in Madrid.

Reguilón was promoted to the first team on May 11 after shining for Castilla and will soon be paid in line with the rest of Real’s senior squad. It is also expected that the 22-year-old will be called up by Spain for a first under-21 cap in March for friendlies ahead of the Euros in Italy June, where La Rojita have been drawn against the host nation, Poland and Belgium in Group A.
